Blurb:

Forged through a childhood trauma and cursed by the Fates, Layla vows never to be at another’s mercy. With determination and training she evolves into a deadly weapon and quiets her inner demons—until the prophecy activates, shattering her peace. The gods who want her dead converge and the hunt to end her life truly begins. The skills that Layla honed for protection become an unconscious tool for death and destruction, threatening not only the gods but her family.

Entrenched in clan turmoil, Thaull’s life hangs at a precipice. He’s faced with a condition known only to his kind, the soul-divide. If not dealt with, his soul will rip in half and he will turn into an unstoppable, ice-cold killing machine. As he hunts the traitor within his Phantom Warrior clan he worsens. A fragile thread of hope remains. The love of a female, freely given, can save him. Through a premonition of an alluring demigoddess, he gambles his very existence in the chance she will be his salvation. ‬‬‬‬

She will go dark from her curse. He will go numb from his. To survive, Layla must risk trusting another or become another.‬‬‬

interview
How do you research for a story? What works best for you?

I would love to say I hop in a plane or car and go wherever my research happens to be. That’s not the case. Our family is very busy and I like writing in my little space in our house. Although, someday if I do decide to write a story about being stranded on an island I think a trip to the Caribbean is in order!

I research a majority of what I need on the Internet, a little by interviewing people, and the rest from books. It works for me. For now…the beach seems like a viable research site for the future.

Which character was your favorite to write? Your least favorite?

The gods. They are so much fun to write. Their personalities are larger than life and I have a blast playing around with them. In the Five Fates series I base a lot of the god’s stories on their myths and then carving it into something entirely their own.

I don’t have a least favorite character yet, but I do have a scene. I find it very difficult to write underwater scenes. Which is really strange as I absolute love lakes and oceans.

Do you outline before you write? or just dive right in?

I outline. But there are times when I have to stop what I’m doing and write out a scene that’s demanding attention. Then I get back to outlining. Sometimes the outline is more detailed than others. It really depends on what I’m writing, what I’m trying to accomplish in the book, or how impatient I am to get started.

Which one of your books would you visit in person and why?

Taken. I really want to go to Scotland. The castles are amazing and the area is so beautiful. I’ve seen pictures that friends of mine have shown me from their trips and it’s definitely on my list of places I hope to visit.

Do you base your characters on real life interactions with people?

For the most part, they are entirely fictional. Although, I am influenced by everything around me. I see something and it sparks and idea, a pathway to a scene or story. Just like the dense fog that morning while I was driving, how it lifted, the pockets and eeriness of it, gave me the scene and plot I needed for Thaull’s character, world, and a few other interactions that you’ll just have to read about.

Is snacking something you do while you write? and if so, what is your weakness?

Well…I have a pretty unhealthy relationship with chocolate and coffee going on right now. It’s definitely a weakness.

What is one thing you can’t live without?

My family. They’re pretty amazing. I think I’d have a very difficult time if I couldn’t read books or write them. I’ve been addicted to both for a very long time.

If you were presented with the opportunity to travel through time, which period would you choose and why?

There are so many fun answers to this question. I’d like to travel to ancient Greece in 900 BC to do a little post research for a book I’ve written. Speaking of post research, Taken is based in a modern period situated in Glen Coe, Scotland. While I’d like to visit Glen Coe, seeing the massacre first hand would be beyond horrific. I’d be interested to know what life was like in the glen and in a castle for a short time. If anything is possible, Olympus is definitely somewhere I’d go. What better research than that?

Sunlight sliced into Layla’s eyes the moment she cracked them open. An impending threat itched along her skin. Outside, mostly naked and vulnerable, she jackknifed to a sitting position. Darkness roared to life. No! She’d dropped her guard. Out of the corner of her eye, she just managed to register Thaull lunge for her before her vision faded.

It was different this time…the reemerging. She took stock of her shaking limbs, the hand clamped onto her wrist, and the deep rumble of displeasure rattling in a male’s chest as reality seeped into her consciousness.

Her free hand grasped for her knife, her senses expanding, filling. Thaull. She knew his smell, and from last night, his name. Oh gods… What had she done?

Terrified to see the condemnation in his eyes, or worse, the pall of death filling them by her hand, she slowly turned. Transfixed by the splattered blood covering his bare chest, she followed the trail up his neck until her gaze landed on his face. His raw carnality hit her like a blast of heat. Was he always this way? His calculating eyes narrowed, observing her every move.

Unsure what to say to him, she cleared her throat. “Get out” hardly seemed appropriate.

Before she could speak, he was on her. His mouth forced hers open, his tongue filling her, fighting for space. He kissed the breath from her, and she was glad for it.

With his hand fisted in her hair, he tugged her head back, staring with an unfathomable look that pierced the depths of her soul. She stood, plastered against him, because he willed it. What just happened?

Hi Bernie! There are a ton of books that I love dearly. I recently read A Lover’s Lament by KL Grayson and BT Urrela and adored it. Soon I’ll be able to dive into my TBR pile and can’t wait! For now I have loads of writing to do. 🙂 Good luck in the drawing!
