Is it possible to be addicted to food? When does indulging in ‘comfort’ food become substance abuse? Is it possible that there is more than a lack of will power at work when someone can’t stop eating? In Food Junkies, Vera Tarman and Phil Werdell explain what is – and isn’t – food addiction, tackling this complex and poorly understood problem through the stories of many survivors and from the perspectives of medical researchers/practitioners. They break down the science behind the research so that anyone can understand it, and take a fresh look at obesity, overeating, binge eating, anorexia and bulimia. For people struggling with these issues — and their families — recognizing the condition is the first step to gaining the kind of support and advice they need.

Food Junkies (finalist in the 2016 Voice Arts Awards) offers hope and guidance. Read by Lisa Bunting, according to one audible customer review, her “calming voice assists with decreasing the shame so often found with addiction and can open the listener up to actually hearing,” while another noted the audiobook version “brought the science to life in a different way than the book. It made it even more real as one can’t ‘skim’ or ‘rush’ through the life-changing content.”

What is a Day in the Life of Vera like, behind the scenes?

Like so many of us, I have fantasies that my life would be a great sitcom, or a reality TV shows. I could image the angles possible to pursue in my medical practice: the alcoholic who continuously gets herself into awful scrapes, the hypochondriac who comes to my office with the list of symptoms he found on the internet; the dependent client who makes weekly appointments and cancels EVERY one thirty minutes before the time slot. People are truly fascinating and I could imagine so truly outrageous episodes.

My life behind the scenes is not nearly as interesting as my patients. By necessity, I structure my day carefully. My life is in the front lines, face to face with patients knee-deep with them in their turmoil.  Life behind the scenes is as quiet as I can make it:  the best day is when I can curl up with my book, my dog, my dinner and blessed quiet. Although I am an extrovert by nature, since I have been a doctor, I value the introverted life.

So: a day in the life of Vera…. Wake up at 6 or 7 am, walk for 30 min, eat breakfast, work for 6 to 12 hours, then walk some more, prepare my meals, and read. Bed is at 10 pm, and then I snuggle with my partner, my dog and my book. At the age of 60, I no longer want to socialize or travel extensively.  Not drinking and following my strict dietary regime has made these outside activities less enticing. Instead, my family life has become increasingly important as the years have passed and I expect this will grow.

Really interesting post. I also find that I am more content staying home and reading and enjoying my animals the older I get. I find that I don’t need to be on the go all the time anymore. I’m lucky to live in a great neighborhood where we all know each other and socialize, especially in the summer.

I enjoyed reading the guest post. I’m like you I don’t really have any interest in socializing or travelling. I would rather read a good book.
