Comparing Covers is a new feature on Lampshade Reader. I will showcase a book title that has multiple covers; from first editions, re-releases, and international releases.
Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey, was one of the first Historical Romances that I read. It holds a high nostalgia factor for me. It’s a book that I can re-read, that I DID re-read, and will continue to talk about for a long time yet. I don’t know what it is about it. Maybe it’s the female heroine disguised as male trope that did it for me. That still remains one of my favorite tropes. Or maybe it was the pirate aspect? Or the fact that the heroine was made to read from an erotic novel to the hero all in the name of his seducing her.
Certainly, it wasn’t the Fabio cover. Or was it? Fabio was so popular in the 80s and 90s, he almost graced every historical that my mom had. In fact, my version of Gentle Rogue IS the one my mom had. I don’t mind Fabio, but they seriously nailed it with this cover. The hero, James Mallory (The BEST Mallory BTW), is described exactly like how Fabio looks in this cover from 1990.
That’s how I’ll always picture James Mallory in my mind. Have you read this? What is your take on Fabio?
Below are other versions released in English. I’m also including some interesting international covers as well. I find that those can be really pretty and different.
