Comparing Covers #34: Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets

by Aleen @ Lampshade Reader

Welcome to Comparing Covers where I showcase a book title that has multiple covers; from first editions, re-releases, and international releases.

I’ve featured a Harry Potter before on Comparing Covers (see: Comparing Covers #4: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) and thought I was overdue for another one.

I always have fun looking at the various covers for Harry Potter and it’s exciting to share with you all. Today, we’ll be looking at Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. My second favorite story from the series.

The Dursleys were so mean and hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he’s packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike

And strike it does. For in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls’ bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley’s younger sister, Ginny.

But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone — or something — starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects . . . Harry Potter himself?

Usually, I’m a fan of first edition covers, but there really is something to say about the second Bloomsbury (UK) edition. I just love the colors and the fact that it showcases the battle with the snake at the end. Look forward to reading what your choices are.

Oooh I love them all!!! I have different reasons why I like all of them 😀

I’ve only seen the Bloomsbury UK 1 in my local bookstores but Bloomsbury UK 2 looks good!

Lily B

I love the last one, I really want to get all of those type for my son, hopefully this year

The Bloomsbury UK 2 is definitely my favorite, I think it looks the most harrowing too. The 15th anniversary and the UK edition 1 are also nice, just in a different way. For whatever reason the original US cover doesn’t do much for me.

Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer

It looks like we all like the same one..LOL Actually I like them all, but favor both 15-year editions. I just love these stories.

Jenea’s Book Obsession

I like all the covers, but my favorite would have to be the UK edition 2.

Mary Kirkland

Dang, hmm I like all of them. I can’t pick just one.

I like the UK 2 best as well. The illustration is less cartoonish, and the coloring is more dramatic.

Kristen @ Metaphors and Moonlight

Oh, I hadn’t even see any of these except the 1st American edition! I never liked the US ones before, but I’m rereading the series now, and I’ve developed a new appreciation for the covers because they’re actually really good. The artwork is good, and there are a lot of details and little references to each book on them, especially since, on the HCs at least, the art wraps continuously all the way around to the back and the jacket flaps. However, I love the art style on the 15th anniversary edition and the UK edition 2, and I love… Read more »

It’s amazing how many different covers/editions the series has now. My preference of these is the 15th anniversary edition.

I really like the 15th anniversary edition but they are all great.
