Wedding Cake Crumble
With Angie and Tate's wedding just around the corner, it's a happy time for Melanie Cooper and the bakery crew. Not only are they finessing the last minute details of the big day, but their bakery, Fairy Tale Cupcakes, has just been hired to bake cupcakes for the blockbuster book signing of a controversial author who wrote a steamy bestseller filled with juicy local gossip.
But one by one, the people Angie has hired to work at the wedding begin turning up dead. As the body count rises, the bestselling author is the next to bite the dust. Mel quickly realizes she needs to figure out how the murders are connected and why--before the killer brings the entire cupcake crew crumbling down. After all, Angie and Tate deserve their sweet happily ever after.
Cozy Mystery at it’s finest, Wedding Cake Crumble by Jenn McKinlay, pushed all the right buttons for me and made me crave cupcakes too!
Top 5 reasons why I enjoyed Wedding Cake Crumble, in no particular order:
1. The cupcakes
Okay well, maybe this shouldn’t be a reason to like the book, but seriously I love a story that can incorporate goodies. Baked goods being my favorite, I was excited to find out that there were recipes for the cupcakes at the end of the book.
2. The “couldn’t put it down” -ness
I knew when I started reading this that I would become invested in all of the characters. Major and minor ones. Also, the mystery of it all was dare I say it? Cute. Yeah, sure you’re thinking: But there were murders, how can that be cute!? Well… it’s kind of hard to explain. Simply put, the humor and the main characters uplifted the story in what would have otherwise been just a normal murder mystery.
3. The range of character personalities.
All of the characters are distinct and have a certain charm about them. My favorite being Marty. The grandpa type character who wants to fit in and uses slang like, “Obvy.” It’s super cute. Oh and the constant quoting from movies made it super fun to read. Partly because that’s what I do ALL.THE.TIME.
4. Made me seriously want to read the The Palms.
What is “The Palms” you ask? The fictional book that is the main reason why certain murders are happening. A super gossipy book with thinly veiled characterizations of people in the town that Mel lives in.
5. The romance
The romance aspect was sweet. Although nothing earth shattering, it did not detract from the mystery. It focused on it when it was appropriate and it wasn’t over the top.
A little note:
I jumped into this series with this book. While there was a lot of backstory that I could have missed, it really didn’t hinder the reading experience. Each book is a new mystery. The only thing that’s continuous are the stories of the characters, but really one can get the gist of what happened. I felt like I didn’t miss anything and I was able to enjoy the story as is.
The mystery wasn’t all that difficult to solve. I basically knew who did it as soon as s/he was introduced. No biggie, I still enjoyed it.
